E-Mail Scams

Every netizen has atleast one e-mail id.Whoever has an email -id would have suffered from spams or junk mails. Hope this post will be useful for everyone...

Avoiding e-mail scams :

Being aware of the different methods that scam artists use can help us to avoid e-mail scams.Some prime examples of e-mail scams along with tips on how to avoid becoming a victim are given below.

Phishing: This scam involves thieves trolling the Internet with fake e-mails, Web sites, chat rooms and other devices while illegally using the names of trusted financial brands in an attempt to convince victims to divulge personal financial information such as credit card or social security numbers.

Money handling: This scam involves recruiting a third-party to receive funds stolen through another e-mail scam into an account before then transferring the money overseas, minus a commission. One such e-mail that recruits money handlers, or "mules," often has a subject line like, "I need your assistance," and a message that describe the sender as an overseas government official who is trying to move his countries' assets to a new secure location.

Advance fee fraud: In this arrangement, a person is approached by someone posing as Nigerian official about an opportunity to make a huge commission by helping the crooked "official" hide a massive overpayment on a government contract. In the end, the victim is persuaded to provide a large up-front fee to keep the transaction moving forward.

Lottery scams: Potential victims are notified via e-mail that they have won a large prize in a foreign lottery. In most cases, the victim is asked to provide either an up-front fee, or bank account or social security numbers so that the lottery can transfer the money.

Internet auction scams: In this case, scam artists pick victims from those using sites such as eBay or Craigslist. They contact those bidding by e-mail asking to work with them outside the auction to make a deal. As usual, the perpetrator asks for payment up front, often in cash

Cautions:

As experts say, the beat way to avoid e-mail scams and Internet fraud is by using common sense to your level best.If you receive an e-mail from an unknown source, practice extreme caution. Keep in mind that the latest wave of e-mail fraud relies on targeting e-mails to specific individuals whom the crooks have picked through various means. Because of this, such an e-mail may contain information designed to peak your interest. Don't be fooled.

Also, never click on a link provided in such an e-mail, as it may take you to a site where malicious software will attempt to invade your computer. If someone is offering you something for free, such as software downloads, be suspicious.

Above all, NEVER give out personal, sensitive information, such as social security, bank account or credit card numbers in response to such e-mails.

Consumers should guard their social security number closely and ignore e-mail and other solicitations asking for sensitive information.

Reporting e-mail scams:

For tradtional case we used to file a police report or approach a lawyer.E-mail scams happen in the nether world of Cyberspace.There are definite steps you can take for reporting e-mail scams and Internet fraud. Several federal agencies, responding to the growing volume of scams, have set up divisions to take reports and investigate such incidents. Reporting e-mail scams helps everyone on the Internet.

The FBI, together with the National White Collar Crime Center, run a Web site dedicated to Internet crime, called the Internet Crime Complaint Center.The site contains a large number of tips for avoiding specific scams. It also has a link for filing a complaint against a third party whom you believe has defrauded or attempted to defraud you.

Be careful!!!!!!! Help others by reporting....

Fireflies--Where do they get their light

Do you wonder where fireflies got their internal light? Fireflies' abdomen cells actually contain the chemical Luciferin and an enzyme called Luciferase. To make light, the Luciferin combines with Oxygen to form an inactive molecule called Oxyluciferin. The Luciferase speeds up the reaction, which occurs in two steps.An intermediate Luciferyl Adenylate is formed,which reacts with Oxygen to form Light and Oxyluciferin.This process is called bioluminescence. Same is true with angler fish which also produces light, but they use it to catch the prey.

One reason that fireflies glow is to attract a mate. Males and females of the same species will flash signals back and forth as a way of communicating. Each firefly species has its own particular pattern. For example, the fireflies of one species will fly around in the night sky and dive steeply just as the flash begins and turn upward to make a distinctive J-shaped pattern of light. Female fireflies hang out on a tree branch or in the grass while the males fly around showing off their best flashes. When a female recognizes the flash from a male of the same species, she will answer with her best flash.

Another reason that fireflies glow is to avoid predators. Fireflies are filled with a nasty tasting chemical called lucibufagens, and after a predator gets a mouthful, it quickly learns to associate the firefly's glow with this bad taste! So not only does the flashing help attract a mate, but it also warns predators to stay away.

Having Lucibufagens is so important for survival that one species of firefly that can't make this chemical acquires it by eating other species that can make it. They do this by mimicking the flash pattern of another species and luring them in close. The unsuspecting male firefly thinks he is going to find a mate, but instead becomes a tasty treat to the tricky firefly.

Sayings-Meanings-Origin

“Don’t Try To Teach Your Grandma To Suck Eggs”

Meaning: Don’t offer advice to someone who has more experience than yourself.

Origin: This is an old phrase and is included in John Stevens; translation of Quevedo’s Comical Works, 1707. Back then, eggs are often eaten raw and it gained popularity among grandmas, especially those without teeth - considering it easy to ‘eat’ and healthy. Raw eggs eventually became an addiction to grandmas and they needed no instruction on ‘sucking’ them because they are so used to it.

“I’ll Eat My Hat”

Meaning: Used to display confidence in a particular matter

Origin: One of the early examples of this phrase would be from Charles Dickens’s The Pickwick Papers, 1837: “If I knew as little of life as that, I’d eat my hat and swallow the buckle whole.” While it is not entirely clear why a hat of all other inedible things is chosen for consumption but there is a possibility that the ‘hat’ is of the large and florid headgear worn by the king and his courtiers, which would have been especially difficult to eat.

The Facts of Life----Why should the wedding ring be worn on the fourth finger?

There is a beautiful and convincing explanation given by the Chinese.....

Thumb represents your Parents

Second (Index) finger represents your Siblings

Middle finger represents your-Self

Fourth (Ring) finger represents your Life Partner &

the Last (Little) finger represents your children

Firstly, open your palms (face to face), bend the middle fingers and hold them together - back to back Secondly, open and hold the remaining three fingers and the thumb - tip to tip.

Now, try to separate your thumbs (representing the parents)..., they will open, because your parents are not destined to live with you lifelong, and have to leave you sooner or later.

Please join your thumbs as before and separate your Index fingers (representing siblings)...., they will also open, because your brothers and sisters will have their own families and will have to lead their own separate lives.

Now join the Index fingers and separate your Little fingers (representing your children)...., they will open too, because the children also will get married and settle down on their own some day.

Finally, join your Little fingers, and try to separate your Ring fingers (representing your spouse).

You will be surprised to see that you just CANNOT....., because Husband & Wife have to remain together all their lives - through thick and thin!! Please try this out............. ISN'T THIS A LOVELY THEORY?

Note: Hi friends I came across this post in a forum... Really interesting na, thought of sharing it with you tooo....

Land of Dawn Lit Mountains

My Drawing Experiences

My genes have an aversion towards drawing. During my grandpa’s era, drawing exams were so stringently conducted in school!!! After one such examination, when the teacher distributed the evaluated papers, he didn’t give my grandpa’s paper. At the end, the teacher proclaimed”ingu oruvar eli varaya sonnatharku sinai eli varainthirukirar” (To draw a rat, a person here has drawn a pregnant rat) and gave punishment too.The person who drew that wonderful rat was none other than my lovely grandpa.Ha Ha Ha….

Mom as well is not good in drawing. For her to pencil in, a straight line with the aid of a scale is itself difficult. Dad, though a civil engineer also is not excellent in drawing, but far better than others in our family. Furthermore he is very good in tracing (helped me a lot). With this finer genes inherited, how would have been my drawing skill… It would have come across many humorous incidents na… That’s what I am sharing with you in this blog…

Starting from my kindergarten, I will just recount my memorable drawing experiences. As you all would be familiar with drawing and coloring test in our kindergartens I will begin from it. When you see my report slip (still preserving) I will be having an ‘A’ for everything except two major talents. You would have guessed one talent. The other one is singing (shall talk about it in another post).Have even got Very Poor grade in these talents…But one advantage I possess is, I have good color sense, if somebody gives me a pencil drawing, I am talented to brilliantly color it. As a result home-works will be good-looking.

A hard to believe event happened after my kindergartens. I got first prize in a drawing competition at school!!! In actual fact, even I too can’t believe it. But that was the only reward I got for drawing (till now, may be in future I will get more rewards).There’s an intriguing story behind this prize.

The competitions were announced ahead of one month and drawing was obligatory. We were on our half-yearly vacations. Christmas decorations were going on at my domicile. I was insisting my dad to teach me to draw something for the competition. I was afraid friends would laugh at my drawing skill. I thought I would practice and do better in the competition. My dad was decorating the manger with a plastic santa-claus which was flat and medium-sized. Out of the blue, an idea hit his mind. He took me to the table, gave a paper placed the santa-claus on the paper and asked to make an outline of it(tracing king na). Wow really a beautiful santa-claus. I practiced with this plastic pattern for one month. You know that I am good in coloring na…Finally I grabbed the prize.

Again from sixth to tenth standard I had to suffer, because of this biology records(red and green colored records). Very complex drawings, what to do? Moreover we have to draw the pictures in our class-work too. Above all drawing in exam is so difficult na. In my eighth standard, for botany class-work my mom drew a diagram and to our surprise, madam gave “very good” for the diagram. Mom used to say we should frame and keep it. I had a friend she is very good in drawing, she helped me in tenth biology records. My dad with the help of an electric bulb and a glass piece taught me to take trace from books. This technique helped me a lot.

I was preparing for my tenth biology exam, in zoology there was a lesson about frog(think it’s the second lesson, not sure), we had to practice drawing excretory system, digestive system, nervous system and reproductive system of frog. To my horror if I drew a frog it looked like an extraterrestrial. I was afraid about what I will do in the exam. Even in my dreams, frogs came!!! On the eve of my exam, my mom, dad and my well-wishers prayed that there should be no question about frog. Luckily I left it in choice.

As regards selection of subjects in higher-secondary, I was so cautious. I avoided biology and took Mathematics with Computer Science. The two years I was free from drawing phobia.
During engineering admission, yet again I became vigilant in choosing branch of study. I collected the syllabus for all branches. Engineering drawing was a paper for all branches during first year. I have phobia for the word drawing itself na. Information technology was the only branch which was devoid of this paper (only during my batch, think God has helped me a lot). So I happily chose Information Technology which was my wish too. Though I avoided engineering drawing, I was caught in Workshop record. Luckily one of my neighbors, a civil student who is good in drawing helped me…

After that I didn’t have any problems involving drawing, somehow managed all hurdles, but was still poor in drawing. Everything was going smooth. Again problems arose in the form of flash practicals, but to my surprise, none criticized my drawings. Think I would have improved my drawing skill at that time. For the final practicals I was asked to do an animation of “Elephant riding a tricycle”. I was able to draw something. I dunno how it was!!!

Today I got the idea that I should draw something, so I tried a little and put into display what I have done. Your comments are most welcome.

ALMIGHTY

Some of my friends are recurrently debating with me concerning my belief of God. So I would like to plainly put down my views about Almighty. I love Almighty who I accept as true, created me and shaped my life. I don’t know what’s his name or where he lives or how he is, but I trust some superficial force is following me ,guiding me, consoling me, protecting me, etc.
I usually, be in awe, how God created this gorgeous universe. He would have been so compassionate; he loves man albeit man has almost ruined one of his creations “The blue earth”. Furthermore human being is exploring cosmos to demolish it too.
Imagine, you have toiled a lot to craft a dazzling bronze statue (just an example you can substitute with whatever you like the most). It took nearly 20 years (just imagination) for you to make it. Each one esteemed your work. You offered it to your friend believing he will treasure it. One fine day you got up from bed and you find the statue destroyed, in front of your eyes by your trusted friend. What will be your feeling? Won’t you be embarrassed? You will hate that person for lifelong na…
But God is really great, He created a very spectacular universe, He gifted Earth to his adorable friend human. He gifted us life, reasoning power, senses and lot more so we can be aware of the pleasures of his creation. What we humans had done. We exploited nature. Isn’t it? God is still tolerantly waiting for man to comprehend his generosity.
A mans belief in God, whatever the belief may be is, vital. Faith in God provides us vigor to face our day- to-day challenges. Peace, unity, care, preserving Nature, honesty, humility, modesty, contended life will make earth ornate and will eventually please God.
I feel I am infantile to put on display, my views regarding Almighty, so I wish; I would bring the debate to an end. I believe in God and consequently don’t wish to argue about it.

Note: Just my humble view, and not to hurt anyone...

Blogging........

Hi GEMS,

What do you think of writing blogs? Are you feeling that I have no valuable work and that’s why I am doing this insignificant job. This post is to clarify your suspicions. When I read about blogs in newspapers and magazines, I didn’t know that it would enthrall me too.

Blog captivates our expensive time. Prior to March I was a sheer blog Reader. Routine blogging has changed me a lot. It brings great contentment and joy to express in black and white, without any fetters. I zealously observe each and every happening around me to find something I could put out in my blog. While conversing with people, my ears sharpen, trying to augment my database.

Reading has been my hobby just from my kindergarten. Thanks to my mom for introducing me to good books apart from school lessons at a very young age. And shouldn't forgot my dad too, who bought me russian story books as well as puzzle books. During college and high school level, I couldn’t continue my leisure pursuit but was contented with reading lot of magazines. Blogging replenished my love for deep reading. I love variety reading rather than confined to a single genre. Detective novels are my favorite.Love historical novels too. Reading and blogging helped perk up my lexis.

Long back, school friends would speculate why I hate watching movies and that idiot-box. I would be contemplating; won’t they get fed up off watching movies? When friends used to discuss about latest movies, actors, actress, etc I used to be just gazing, since I was not aware of anything about their conversation.They used to avoid discussing about movies in my company. During my college days (from 2nd year of my u.g.) I started watching movies. I watched just to know about it, so it would be easier to mingle with my friends. My school friends were wondering, what changed shalu. But at present I think it’s a big mistake, I have ravaged precious seconds. Most movies I would just see the beginning and ending, read about it in reviews and discuss about it as though I have seen it. Though I hate idiot-box I love hearing radio. Anyhow movie watching didn’t suit me well. It was not my arena. Now once again back on my track, thanks to blogging. Blogging brought me back to my arena of reading.

After my post graduation, I got ample time to read books. Acquainted with my nearest library and got five cards, still it’s not sufficient. Librarian is so strict too. Surfing also has become my modern hobby. As time changes hobbies too change na. Being a netizen from 2002, I have browsed a lot. I marvel; how this splendid technology can be used to increase our knowledge, communicate with people across the world, publish our creations, etc. Some of my favorite websites are, http://www.wikipedia.org/ http://www.howstuffworks.com/ http://www.brainbashers.com/ http://www.nicefacts.org/ http://www.supercook.com/ http://www.tamilish.com/ and definitely http://www.shalinisamuel.blogspot.com/

I enjoyed reading and surfing. Yet something disturbed me. I was not giving out my knowledge to anyone. Blogging was the idea that lit up my mind. Though I couldn’t share everything, I hope that I will contribute my best.

Think you love reading my blog, since you have read all over till the end. Thank you for your appreciations as well constructive criticisms. Hope you will be with me in the long journey of blogging .
Stay connected…

With regards,
Shalu

"Yeti a myth or reality still a mystery"

Yeti an inhabitant of the Himalayan region(Nepal and Tibet) is a mythical creature.BigFoot in Pacific NorthWest of America is also a similar legend.Yeti is a Tibetan word meaning bear in a rocky place.Other names include Meh-teh,Dzu-teh,Migoi,Mirka,Kang Admi,Ban Manche,Kanchenjunga Rachhyyas,etc.

First sightings of Yeti were recorded in the diaries and papers of British officials residing in the Himalayan region, during 19th century।B।H Hodgson was the first to mention about Yeti.First reliable report about Yeti was made by N.A.Tombazi in 1925.He couldn't photograph Yeti but only its footprints. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay had also reported about Yeti .

Based on various reports composite description of Yeti would be,
*Giant ape-like, hairy monster.
*Short legs and long arms
*Naked face(without fur)
*Black and Brown
*Can stand on knuckles like a gorrila
*Foot is almost square and too large
*Nine-foot tall
*Benign creature
All together Yeti is a tall human being,walking upright and clothed uniformly with fur।

Footprints:

Footprints were similar to those of a man, six to seven inches long by four inches wide at the broadest part of the foot.Five distinct toes and the instep were obiviously marked,but the trace of the heel was indistinct.The prints were one-half to two feet apart indicating that Yeti's legs are short.

Stories about Yeti come in the form of trails found,shapes seen at a distance,face-to-face encounter by local people।Expeditions to trace Yeti found only footprints,scalps and hides.

Scientists' observation about footprints:Scientists couldn't confidently match the footprints with any known living creature.Some feel that probably it would be the trails of a languar monkey or a bear.Due to sun's rays footprints in snow can change shape and grow larger.Still bear/monkey theory will not work as these animals move on all four feet.

First Seismometer--An Earthquake Detector

##########Chinese astronomer, a brilliant mathematician and a scientist in the Han Dynasty Chan Heng(AD 78-139) invented an earth quake detector in 132 AD.
Necessity behind invention:##########The ancient Chinese believed seismic events, with their death and destruction, were important signs from heaven. So it was important to the Han Court be alerted to earthquakes occurring anywhere in the kingdom. A correct call wins one immortal fame, as in Chan Heng’s case, while disgrace and punishment awaits a wrong call.

Description:##########Chan Heng’s original seismometer was lost. Luckily, its description survived. It was a cast bronze vessel with a domed lid, resembling a wine jar. The working innards, of "toothed machinery and ingenious constructions," were hidden. The surface of the vessel was decorated with motifs of mountains, tortoises, bi
rds, animals and antique writing. Around the vessel were eight dragons(representing eight directions) whose mouths held a carefully balanced ball. Round the base of the vessel sat eight corresponding metal toads with their mouths open, looking upwards.When the first tremors of an earthquake made the device vibrate, the balls fell into the frogs' mouths, making a noise to warn the upcoming danger.The direction of the earthquake is indicated by the position of the toad which swallowed the ball. This instrument was most remarkable.

History says:##########On one occasion one of the dragons let fall a ball from its mouth though no perceptible shock could be felt. All the scholars at the capital were astonished at this strange effect occurring without any evidence of an earthquake to cause it. But several days later a messenger arrived bringing news of an earthquake in Lung-Hsi (400 miles away). Upon this everyone admitted the mysterious power of the instrument.
Principle behind:##########The workings of Chan Heng’s seismometer were never revealed. Most experts agree however, that it worked on the principle of inertia. A mass is suspended. An earthquake shakes the vessel, causing a slight displacement between the mass and the vessel. This movement is transmitted via levers and gears to push out a ball.
Amusements behind the design:
##########In the design of any instrument, the goal is to make the instrument sensitive to the desired signal while simultaneously rejecting false signals. For a pendulum, this optimal point is at the resonance. Model seismometer designed based on the description of Chan Heng is intended as a demonstrator. To test its efficiency a man shakes the table to simulate an earthquake. So our seismometer’s pendulum is "tuned" to this input(a false signal). The crust of the earth absorbs the high frequency content of a quake. The signal from a distant earthquake is in the sub-audio range. So to detect actual earthquakes the pendulum would need to be several feet in length.How can Chan Hengs seismometer detect an eartquake that occured 400 miles away!!!!.
##########Indeed, we read that Chan Heng’s seismometer was described as having a diameter of "eight chhih"! (A little more than 6 ft.) His device appears to be -- incredibly -- "scientifically designed!" In 132 A.D., did he "really know" what we know today? Or did he hit on it by pure luck? Earthquakes occur so infrequently, how does one study it? Consider also the expense of making bronze castings the size of a horse in that age.
##########Another question you may want to ponder is why did Chang Heng take such pains to decorate his instrument with celestial motifs. What was the real purpose of these decorations? Do you think this helps the instrument to function better? Or did he hope this would make his device more believable?Why he selected bronze? If Chan Heng is reading this blog please give us the answer Sir.........

*************MOTHER'S LOVE*************

A Mother's love is something
that no on can explain,

It is made of deep devotion
and of sacrifice and pain,

It is endless and unselfish
and enduring come what may

For nothing can destroy it
or take that love away . . .

It is patient and forgiving
when all others are forsaking,

And it never fails or falters
even though the heart is breaking . . .

It believes beyond believing
when the world around condemns,

And it glows with all the beauty
of the rarest, brightest gems . . .

It is far beyond defining,

it defies all explanation,

And it still remains a secret
like the mysteries of creation . . .

A many splendoured miracle
man cannot understand

And another wondrous evidence
of God's tender guiding hand.

VATTAKOTAI(my favorite picnic spot)

Entrance to the fort

********** Vattakottai Fort or 'Circular Fort' is a seaside fort near Kanyakumari, the southern tip of India. It was built in the 18th century as a coastal defence-fortification and barracks in the erstwhile Travancore kingdom.

**********It was constructed under the supervision of Captain Eustachius De Lannoy, an ex-Dutch naval officer of the VOC, who became commander of the Travancore army (the very army that defeated him in the Battle of Colachel) in the 18th century, after he earned the trust of the Travancore King Marthanda Varma. De Lannoy constructed Vattakottai, as part of the defence-fortifications he undertook throughout Travancore.

**********The fort is made of granite blocks and, today, a part of the fort extends into the sea. It is a protected site under the Indian archaeological department. A major renovation of the fort was undertaken recently by the department, and the site is now a popular tourist spot.
Vattakottai Fort commands a picturesque view of both the sea on one side, and the hills (Wester Ghjats)on the other . Another interesting feature near the site is a beach of black sands. It is about 7 km from Kanyakumari town.

History of my District

````````````Kanyakumari has a rich and ancient history. It also bears Christian, Jain and Muslim influence. It is believed that when St Thomas (one of the 12 apostles of Jesus) came to Indian subcontinent in 52 AD a church was established in Kanyakumari area.
````````````It is proved that great Greek philosophers like Erosthenes, Ptolemy and Pliny had been to Kanyakumari. It also finds mention in the Periplus written somewhere around 800 AD by Arrian a Greek man of letters. Similarly, Jainism and Islam have also left their imprints on this place and have considerably contributed to the architectural wealth and literary heritage of the region.
````````````The area of Kanyakumari had seen the rule of Cholas, Cheras, Pandyas, Vijayanagara Kings, the Nayaks , Venad Kings to Dutch and then British interference.
Rise of Venad Chieftains
````````````Gradually the Chola Empire became weak with the rise of of Hoysalas and western Chalukyas. The Venad Chieftains descendants of Chera’s seized opportunity and gradually established a firm grip on the areas now under modern Tamil Nadu. By 1115 AD the Venad Kings under Veera Kerala Varma and his successors achieved complete succession.
````````````In 1609 AD Viswanatha Nayak of Madurai captured Kanyakumari. Afterwards there was no real threat to Venad Kings. Kanyakumari thus became an integral part of the Venad Empire with the capital at Padmanabhapuram. King Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma(1729-1758) of Venad dynasty formed Travancore ( Modern Kerala) by extending his domain further north up to Aluva. Kanyakumari thus came to be known as Southern Travancore. In 1741, King Marthanda Varma another great king from the same dynasty overcame the Dutch East India Company forces at the fiercely fought “Battle of Colachel.”
Kanyakumari under British Supremacy
````````````After Marthanda Varma, the subsequent rulers were very weak and as the British forces were gradually tightening their noose over all Indian Princely states Kanyakumari was also no exception. The British established complete control over Venad Kings and continued till India’s independence in the year 1947. The Kings of Travencore state ruled over Kanyakumari under the overall sovereignty of the British.
Modern Kanyakumari
````````````Travancore became part of the independent Indian Union in 1947 thus the royal reign came to an end. From 1947 to 1956, His Highness Sree Chithira Thirunal, Maharaja of Travancore continued as Rajpramukh of the Travancore-Cochin Union.
````````````In the year 1949, Kanyakumari became a part of the reconstituted Travancore-Cochin Union. The Tamil majority of Kanyakumari was not happy with this. Eventually in 1956 bowing to a mass agitation under the leadership of Thiru M.A. Nesamani Government of India amalgamated Kanyakumari District with Tamil Nadu(then Madras State).
